Why We Never Get Tired of the Coastal Aesthetic
Outer Banks is back in the spotlight, and while plenty of people are tuning in to see how the story ends, there's another part of the show that's always been hard to ignore: the setting.
Ocean views, sun-faded colors, breezy clothes, weathered wood and that slightly undone feeling that comes with spending an entire day near the water. The coastal aesthetic has been around much longer than Outer Banks, but somehow it never really disappears.
Maybe that's because it isn't actually about decorating everything with seashells.
The modern coastal look is much simpler. Think natural textures, soft blues, sandy neutrals, plenty of light and spaces that don't feel overly styled. It brings some of the ease of being on vacation into everyday life without making your home look like a beach rental.
That relaxed feeling works especially well in the spaces where we start and end our days. A bright vanity, clean countertops, good lighting and a few thoughtfully chosen essentials can make a bathroom or bedroom feel lighter without requiring a complete redesign.
Even the smallest details can capture that feeling. A woven basket. Crisp white towels. Natural wood. A mirror that reflects more light around the room. Pieces that are useful first and beautiful second.
Trends will keep changing, but there's a reason we keep coming back to the coast.
It reminds us of somewhere we'd rather be.
