Summer is always filled with events and moments to celebrate. Whether you’re going to summer festival, a high school graduation, or celebrating Father’s Day, it’s easy to achieve the perfect summer celebration look no matter where you’re going or how hot it is outside. Here are our top tips for simple and sweat-proof summer beauty.
SPF is non-negotiable year round, but it’s especially important to increase your normal SPF usage in summer. Make sure to use an SPF that’s specifically formulated for the face to avoid any breakouts or clogged pores. If you’ll be out in direct sun, remember to use an SPF for body. Some face moisturizers and body lotions have built-in SPF so you only need to apply 1 product for multiple benefits. Don’t forget UV protectant if your hair is colored (which are normally mixed into the heat protectants you use for heat styling).
For makeup that’s long-lasting throughout hot summer days, makeup primers are your secret weapon. Use a face primer after skincare but before any foundation to help keep your face makeup intact. Use an eyeshadow primer under any eye makeup (it’ll even make eyeliner more long-lasting), or try a lip primer if you’re wearing lipstick and need it to last during a party where there will be a lot of eating and drinking. To properly blend primers for a flawless makeup look, use a lighted makeup mirror with a 5X or higher magnification and a synthetic makeup brush.
After a day in the heat and salty ocean air, transition from the beach to a BBQ with dry shampoo to refresh the hair and add extra volume. Hold the dry shampoo at least 12 inches from the roots of your hair, spray liberally, then let your hair sit for 30 seconds before using your fingertips to blend in the dry shampoo. From here, you can leave your hair down, or if you need to wash your hair then it’s easy to create a voluminous ponytail with the dry shampoo already adding lift at the roots.
You don’t need a full face of makeup for summer celebrations. A bold lip, such as a red or pink, gives enough pop of color to take your makeup look from day to night time festivities. The brighter the lip, the less eye and face makeup you can do, so this trick is especially handy if you’re short on time. If you’re not use to wearing a bold lip, try a lip gloss or stain for a sheer application. For medium intensity, choose a traditional lipstick tube. Go for a liquid lipstick if you’re looking for a high-impact statement lip. Apply any bold lip color using a lighted magnified makeup mirror with at least a 5X magnification so you can create crisp lines (especially if you’re using a lip liner).
Bring a touch-up kit with you during the day when you’re out and about. It’s a never-ending battle with summer heat and humidity, so it’s best to be prepared for midday touch-ups or a surprise sunset happy hour. Items to pack include a pressed translucent powder to keep shine at bay, a mini bottle of makeup setting spray to refresh makeup you already have on, eyeliner for touch-ups, and a lighted compact travel mirror so you can touch-up anywhere you are.
