Beauty Tools Are Becoming the New Beauty Essentials
Beauty routines are changing. While skincare, makeup and hair products still get plenty of attention, some of the biggest beauty conversations of 2026 are increasingly focused on the tools that make those routines easier.
That shift was especially noticeable this week as major beauty publications released their annual awards. PEOPLE’s 2026 Beauty Awards expanded into treatments and beauty devices for the first time, while Harper’s Bazaar highlighted a new group of innovative beauty tools selected for their technology, ease of use and ability to make everyday routines more effective.
Beauty Is Becoming More Functional
For years, beauty innovation largely meant a new ingredient, formula or shade. Now, innovation can just as easily mean finding a smarter way to complete a routine.
Consumers are making room for devices that solve small, everyday frustrations. Tools that simplify hair care, improve visibility while getting ready or make self care easier to fit into a busy schedule are becoming part of the routine rather than an occasional extra.
Harper’s Bazaar noted that its winning beauty devices needed to do more than simply take up counter space. Editors looked for technology that made day to day routines easier and addressed a real need.
That idea feels especially relevant right now. A beauty product does not necessarily need to add another step to feel innovative. Sometimes the best products make the steps already happening feel easier.
The Everyday Routine Is Getting Smarter
This is also why practical beauty tools continue to have a place alongside more high tech launches.
A lighted mirror that makes it easier to see details while applying makeup, a detangling brush that combines brushing with a soothing scalp massage or a portable beauty tool designed to move from the bathroom to a suitcase all solve very familiar problems.
The technology may change, but the goal remains surprisingly simple: make getting ready a little easier.
That has always been an important part of thoughtful product design. Features like adjustable lighting, magnification, cordless designs and rechargeable power are not there simply because they sound impressive. They work best when they quietly improve something people already do every day.
A More Thoughtful Kind of Beauty Upgrade
The growing attention around beauty devices suggests that the definition of a beauty essential is becoming broader. PEOPLE’s decision to include devices alongside traditional skincare, makeup, hair care and body products is another sign that tools are becoming a more established part of the beauty conversation.
And maybe that is the beauty trend worth paying attention to this year.
The next great addition to a routine might not be another serum or lipstick. It could simply be a better tool for using the products already sitting on the counter.
